Our Story

Food and family have always been at the heart of my journey. My mother and I share a deep passion for cooking, and our love for travel constantly fuels our creativity in the kitchen. From Japan to Italy to the South of France, every experience has shaped the way we approach food—blending tradition with inspiration from the places and people who have influenced us.

My late grandfather’s love for fishing instilled in both my mother and me a deep appreciation for working with fish. It’s more than just an ingredient to us—it’s a way to honor his memory and celebrate his life. On my father’s side, my Italian grandmother, Ida, played an equally important role. Long before my mother became a chef, Ida taught her the art of Italian cooking, adding another layer of culinary tradition to our family’s story.

Our journey truly began when my mother left Japan to build a new life in the U.S., much like many of my friends’ parents who took that same leap of faith. She embraced her new home, fell in love, and discovered the beauty of Italian cuisine alongside my father’s family. Thirteen years ago, she founded Vienna Catering, turning her passion into a thriving business that continues to serve the community.

Four years ago, my brother moved to France, and through our visits to the South of France, we were inspired to bring a piece of that experience home. That inspiration led to the creation of Hapa Bistro—a family-run restaurant where guests can celebrate special occasions or simply escape into the warmth of a neighborhood bistro.

Hapa Bistro is a reflection of our heritage, our travels, and our love for creating meaningful dining experiences. We invite you to be part of our story—one plate at a time.

With gratitude,
Sohei
